Our History

For more than a century, Sinai Chicago has remained deeply rooted on Chicago’s West Side, guided by a commitment to serve communities that have historically been excluded from equitable healthcare. Founded in 1919 as Mount Sinai Hospital, the institution was established at a time when Jewish physicians and patients faced widespread discrimination. From the beginning, Sinai was shaped by the belief that healthcare is a social responsibility, not only a medical service.

As surrounding neighborhoods changed over the decades, Sinai made the uncommon decision to stay. While many institutions relocated, the hospital remained on the West Side, adapting its care to serve Black and Latino communities and responding directly to the realities of segregation, disinvestment, and structural inequality. Today, Sinai Chicago continues this legacy through community partnerships, public health initiatives, and a long-standing presence in North Lawndale and neighboring communities.

The Mount Sinai Resale Shop is an extension of this commitment to community care. Founded in 1982 as a donation-based gift shop operated by the Mount Sinai Hospital Women’s Board within the hospital, the shop was created to transform community generosity into vital resources supporting Sinai’s mission. As it grew, the shop moved into independent storefronts, ultimately relocating to its current location at 2902 N. Clark Street in 2018.

Originally run entirely by volunteers, the resale shop has evolved into a thriving operation that now employs a staff of 15–20 people. Working in partnership with auction houses, estate sale managers, and a dedicated community of donors and supporters, the shop generates meaningful financial support for Sinai’s programs and patient care. Every donation and purchase continues a shared legacy of reinvesting in the community.
